LAET Coronavirus Support Fund
Supporting our students, supporting our community
The Coronavirus pandemic affects all of us, and those with the least are often the hardest hit.
The Northumberland Park ward of Tottenham, where the school is situated, is amongst the 2% most deprived wards in the country. Over half of our students were eligible for free school meals at secondary school. Even in these early stages of the COVID pandemic, members of our student body have already experienced bereavements in their immediate family.
Thanks to the generosity of our donors, students began to receive support on Monday 20 April, when the school term resumed. The difference this will make cannot be overstated.
Help us to reach our target, enabling us to continue this support.
Like the rest of the country, we know that more members of our community are likely to be impacted by this crisis over the coming days, weeks and months.
We are establishing this fund as we want to ensure these students – and their families and communities – are supported through this crisis now and in the months to come.
Amongst other things, this fund will enable us to:
- Provide immediate financial and practical support to meet the impact of this crisis on our students and their families. We have identified 183 students who would most benefit from additional support for their basic necessities, like food. Providing these students with between £15 to £30 a week each, dependent on need, would cost the school in the region of £3,690 per week. Your donation will make a real and immediate difference to our students.
- To help our students and the wider Tottenham community by providing financial support to those institutions who are at the front line of the community response such as the Tottenham Food Bank and the Felix Project.
- To support those members of the LAET community from the most deprived backgrounds on an ongoing basis through a hardship fund. We know that children from disadvantaged backgrounds will be hardest hit by this crisis and will require long term support to narrow the gap with those from more economically stable families.
We know that those locked in poverty are more likely to be in poor health, disabled, and to be caring for others; more likely to have insecure jobs and to face particular challenges staying afloat in the face of rising costs and income loss.
We are facing an unprecedented challenge, and we do not know what needs our students will present with. We want to make sure we are able to support them, for as long as our support is needed.
We know there will be ongoing academic and pastoral challenges ahead, and aim to set up an ongoing hardship fund to help us meet this need.
